Step 1: CHECK IN:

Step 2: To find out information about your flight, have a look at the DEPARTURES BOARD
Remarks: ON TIME vs DELAYED / GO TO GATE / CANCELLED
Step 3: SECURITY CONTROL
After checking in, you have to pass the security control, where your hand luggage is checked. You will pass through a metal detector and even a body scanner (in the USA). Be polite when talking to the officers!!
- Put your hand luggage in a tray (bandeja) as well as EVERYTHING you have in your pockets (bolsillos).
- You may be asked to take your shoes off. If asked, leave them in another tray.
- Pass through the metal detector.
- You may be asked to be frisked (cachear), be helpful!
- You may be asked to open your hand luggage, be helpful!
Step 4: Find your gate and wait in the departure LOUNGE.
If you travel to the USA and make a transfer (trasbordo) you can be asked for another search, be polite and helpful!
If you buy something at the airport- duty free shops, you may be asked to declare them before boarding.
Step 5: BOARDING
When travelling to the USA you will be interviewed before boarding about your trip.
- Can you show me your passport?
- Is this your first time in the US?
- Where are you going?
- Where are you staying?
- When and how are you coming back?
- Why are you travelling to the US?
- Are you flying alone?
- Have you packed your luggage?
- Has anybody asked you to bring anything in your luggage?
- Has anybody openned your luggage?
- Do you know somebody in the US?
- Would you like to live in the US?
And many other questions you have to answer. Be polite. If you don't understand you may say:
- Sorry, I don't understand you, could you say it again, please? Thank you.
Step 6: On the plane
Flight attendant: Can I see your boarding pass? Ok... your seat is...(right, left... corridor...)
The pilot will make some announcement such as:
This is your captain. My name is Harold Burns, and I'd like to thank you for choosing Pan Am Airlines. Welcome aboard our Boeing 747, flight 769 to Miami. We'll be taking off as soon as the air traffic control give us the clearance to do so. I'd like to remind you to keep your seats belts fastened, and also that smoking is not allowed on Pan Am flights.
2nd ANNOUNCEMENT
This is your captain speaking once again. My apologies, I'm afraid we have an air traffic delay. It'll be 20 minutes before we can take off. In the meantime please sit back, relax and our flight attendants will serve you courtesy drinks of Pan Am Airlines. We will inform you of our departure time as soon as we receive a go signal from the air traffic control. Thank you.
3rd ANNOUNCEMENT
Ladies and Gentlemen. We're now cruising at 25,000 feet and I've just turned off the "Fasten Seat Belts" sign. Though I would like to remind everyone for your safety to keep your seat belts fastened at all times. I'm hoping to make up some of the lost time we had. I'll be updating our progress later in the flight. Our flight attendants will be serving lunch in a couple of minutes.
4th ANNOUNCEMENT
This is your captain Harold Burns speaking. I have some good news. We have made up some lost time of our E.T.A. (that's estimated time of arrival) in San Diego where it is now 9.40 pm local time. If you want to adjust your time, I repeat 9.40 is the time in San Diego and we'll soon be commencing with our landing into the city. The temperature on the ground is 4º centigrade with clear skies and some light snow cover. Let me also suggest to put on your winter coats since it will be very cold down there.
5th ANNOUNCEMENT
We're now taxiing in to our gate. May I remind you to remain seated with your seat belts fastened until the plane has come to a complete halt. It is now 9.50. Passengers with connecting flights should proceed immediately to the Transfer Desk in Concourse B. Thank you for flying Pan Am Airlines and we hope you'll be flying with us again soon.
Step 6: PASSPORT CONTROL
Follow the signs towards:
Queue at the passport control in the correct line, such as EU RESIDENTS (in European countries).
For those who are travelling to the USA, you have to fill in and sign the Customs Declaration to give the officer at the passport control. They will also take a photo of you and your fingerprints.
Go to the luggage desk and wait for your suitcases.
If they are not there, go to the BAGGAGE (or LUGGAGE) CLAIM DESK with your boarding pass and fill in the claim.
Keep your boarding pass, your check luggage claim ticket and your claim form until you get your luggage back.
